For a headwear store, the decision comes down to how much of that work the customer should do. Can they measure their head and read the right chart, or would a recommendation help?
The chart can support both approaches. Even with a recommendation tool, you still need accurate sizing information for every product.

One measurement, two product charts
Imagine a customer with a measured head circumference of 57.5 cm comparing two products in your store.
The following charts are fictional and illustrate the mapping only. They are not manufacturer specifications or personal sizing advice.

The customer’s measurement stays the same. The product determines which size label applies.
Using manual charts, the customer reads both tables and selects M for Product A or S for Product B. With a correctly configured recommender, the software performs that lookup for the product being viewed.
A store-wide rule that always converts 57.5 cm to M would be wrong for Product B. Adding more charts only helps if each product uses the right one.
The example avoids a boundary value. For boundary measurements, overlapping ranges, or values outside the chart, agree on the handling with the manufacturer. Do not invent a universal “round up” rule for your catalog.
When is a manual size chart enough?
A manual chart can be enough when the sizing instructions are easy to follow, and customers can complete the process without repeated assistance.
It is a reasonable starting point when:
- Your catalog has few sizing variations, and every product shows its relevant chart.
- Customers already know their head measurement or can obtain it easily.
- Your support conversations do not reveal a recurring problem with measuring or choosing a size.
- You can keep the charts accurate without adding another tool to maintain.
A multi-brand store can still use manual charts. The number of brands alone doesn’t create a need for automation. Look at where customers struggle: finding the chart, taking the measurement, or applying it to a particular product.
When should you add a size recommender?
Consider a recommender when customers repeatedly need help translating measurements into a product size. If getting the measurement itself is the obstacle, evaluate a camera-based option.
Before choosing a tool, ask the provider to demonstrate your own catalog. Check whether it can assign charts at the product level, handle exceptions within a brand, and explain a result near a size boundary. Include a product that uses different sizing rules from the rest of the range.
Also ask how the system handles missing data or an unsuccessful measurement. A result that needs another measurement should give the shopper a clear next step.
Keep someone responsible for sizing data. A new supplier chart or a changed product range needs attention whether customers read the chart themselves or software interprets it.
Camera-based sizing for a multi-brand helmet store
